Opening the Windows of Heaven (Part 2 of 2)Print This Post
“He who is faithful in what is least is faithful also in much; and he who is unjust in what is least is unjust also in much.” (Luke 16:10).
The Tithe is a small thing, comparatively speaking. And when God lays claim to it our response is definitely a very telling thing. Our faithfulness in small things is itself a big thing, because it is a test of our ultimate trustworthiness. If we wince and whine, grudge and fudge over small matters of earthly finances, such as tithing – then we can know for a certainty that God cannot trust us with true riches of heaven.
“Therefore if you have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches? And if you have not been faithful in what is another man’s, who will give you what is your own?” (Luke 16:11,12).
If I watch a man squander $100 – then I have no doubt what he would do with a $1000. The same is true of those who are faithful with the smaller amount; they will also be faithful with the larger. Now listen to me – it’s not about money. God touches the money issue only as a means of measuring where your heart truly stands!
Money matters so very much to us — this is precisely why God touches it with the tithe. Comparatively, the tithe is a little thing…but it shows out faithfulness to be trusted with the bigger things. Thus, if you cannot be faithful before God with money, then you will not be trusted by God with the true riches!
That’s why it matters to God whether or not you tithe. Tithing is a test of your faith in God. Can He do more with the 90% after you have tithed, than you can do by trying to keep and manage 100%? Of course He can! The tithe is a test to show if your truly believe this. It is also a test to show if you are faithful in little things. Ten Percent — are you kiddin’ me? How small a thing is that? But, oh how we stumble over this small thing!
George Barna reported an odd paradox, “Evangelical Christians are generous, relative to the world; but disobedient, relative to the Bible.” It’s true. Statistics show that American Christians give proportionately less today than during the worst year of the Great Depression. A few years ago I came across this bombshell – If every Christian in the United States lost their job and went on Welfare, and then decided to faithfully tithe 10% of the money they were given, Church offerings would increase by over 30%!
The one test we seem to fail over and over is the test God gives us with the Tithe. And we are stunted in many ways because of it. The more and more we hold on to our money, the poorer and poorer we become. Oh, sure, we may have the riches of this world; but we will be paupers in the Kingdom of God. We may be powerful and influential in the Market Place, but we are puny and pointless in things of Life.
Let’s break free from this by becoming intentionally faithful in our handling of finances; and let’s start small. Give a tithe unto the Lord today and watch what He does with it; how He blesses you for your act of faith and love; how He backs you up for your glorious defiance against the god of Mammon; how He opens the windows of Heaven and pours on you a blessing there shall not be room to contain – an outpouring like Niagara Falls!
“Give, and it shall be given unto you!” (Luke 6:38).
